Empowering YWCA USA's Impactful Advocacy

About the client

YWCA USA, a leading advocate for women's rights and empowerment, engaged Raben to amplify its impact through media outreach and strategic partnerships.

In 2019, Raben partnered with YWCA USA to launch YWomenVote, securing national coverage in NBC News, Politico, Ms. Magazine, and Latin Post. Leveraging survey findings, we placed an op-ed in USA Today—reprinted in seven outlets—which reached more than 60 million readers.

Our collaboration continued with a cross-country roadshow, featuring surrogates from five presidential campaigns and garnering media coverage. On the FMLA anniversary, we connected YWCA's economic empowerment policy with domestic violence issues, securing an op-ed in Refinery 29.

Amid the pandemic, Raben adapted YWCA's communications to address COVID-19's impact on women. We secured high-profile media opportunities, positioning YWCA USA as a leading voice on domestic violence. Notable coverage included NowThis, Vox, Business Insider, and Ms. Magazine, leading to additional features in NBC News, Philanthropy Roundtable, and C-SPAN. Subsequently, Sheryl Sandberg's $1.5 million contribution to YWCA's domestic violence work was featured in The Chronicle of Philanthropy and Politico's Women Rule.

While highlighting domestic violence, our collaborative efforts ensured YWCA's broader initiatives were woven into the news cycle. An op-ed in Morning Consult emphasized the importance of census participation during emergencies like COVID-19, boosting civic engagement.

National media opportunities incorporated local YWCA perspectives, featured in outlets such as HuffPost, Reuters, NPR's Michigan Radio, and The Fuller Project.

Capitalizing on CEO Alejandra Castillo's role in Gov. Cuomo's Domestic Violence task force, Raben drafted and placed an op-ed in The Hill in early July, further reinforcing YWCA's advocacy on a national scale.
