The Raben Group's policy breakfast with John Payton, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

We’d be delighted if you would join us for The Raben Group’s policy breakfast with John Payton, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Currently the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund’s sixth president and director-counsel, Mr. Payton's distinguished career in the law is notable for both his public-sector and private-sector service. As a partner at the Washington firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, his practice ranged from complex commercial matters to the most challenging civil rights issues. Mr. Payton was the lead counsel in the consolidated case Gratz v. Bollinger (2003), one of the most momentous civil rights cases of the post-1960s era, helping the University of Michigan successfully defend the use of race in its admissions processes before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Payton’s voluntary activities in the legal community include service on the District of Columbia Bar, the American Bar Association, the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, the National Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the District of Columbia Public Defender Service.

He has also served as a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, the Georgetown Law Center and Howard University Law School. He is a member of the American Law Institute, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Master in the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court.

The policy breakfast is not a fundraiser and space is limited, so please let us know immediately if you plan to attend by emailing Rosa Mendoza at rmendoza@rabengroup.com or calling 202-587-2870.
