| KAREN MARANGI is a Principal at the The Raben Group, bringing nearly 20 years of legal and policy experience on issues ranging from intellectual property and technology policy to civil and criminal justice issues. Ms. Marangi is active in the Constitution and Justice and Intellectual Property and Entertainment practice groups.
As a lawyer, lobbyist and legislative aide, Ms. Marangi has been engaged in policy debates ranging from the merger of major corporations to the implementation of complicated policies and regulations. She played a key role in the development of the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund and has been active on numerous other civil justice issues. She helped enact the Safe Needles Act and other legislation to protect the health and safety of patients and consumers. Over the years, Ms. Marangi has played a leading role in several coalitions, and in the development of grassroots and grass tops campaigns.
Prior to joining The Raben Group, Ms. Marangi represented a broad range of clients for nearly 10 years at Patton Boggs, a leading law and lobbying firm in Washington, D.C. In that capacity, she provided strategic and legal counseling to several technology companies, played a leading role in the Coalition for Patent Fairness and worked closely with both large and small clients to develop and implement their legislative strategies. Ms. Marangi has experience working with national nonprofits as well as local government entities. She has worked closely withseveral leading juvenile justice organizations, including the Center for Children's Law and Policy, as well as the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Previously, Ms. Marangi served as counsel to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) on the Senate Judiciary Committee. In that capacity, she represented the Senator's interests on a wide range of issues including civil liberties, criminal justice and immigration. She played a leading role in the negotiations on juvenile justice legislation and helped guide Bill Lann Lee's nomination to be Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights through the Senate. Prior to law school, Ms. Marangi served as a legislative aide to Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA), who then served as a Majority Whip in the Senate. In that capacity, she routinely met with constituents and assisted in developing policies on civil justice issues, women and children's issues, immigration and Native American affairs.
Ms. Marangi is a graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School. She earned an A.B. in English and was engaged in a range of activities while on campus, including anti-apartheid efforts and tutoring in a neighboring community. She also participated in a student trip to El Salvador in 1987, studied in Italy, and served as a resident advisor in her senior year. During law school, Ms. Marangi co-founded the "Children's Law Society" and served on the Board of the East Palo Alto Community Law Project. She also was a student leader of the Domestic Violence Clinic and was active in other clinical programs.
Ms. Marangi was born and raised in Southern California. She is a Member of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the State Bar of California. She is also a member of the Women's High Tech Task Force and the Women's Bar Association and serves on the Board of the Youth Law Center. |
