Over the years, Karen has brought her creative and strategic thinking to policy debates ranging from the merger of major corporations to the development of the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund. She currently advises the CPA Association and the Council on Foundations on IP and tax policy issues, and has helped them broaden their ties both in and out of government. Karen plays a key role in the Mayors Against Illegal Guns' work to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, including coordinating high level meetings and developing key federal strategies.
Before joining The Raben Group, Karen worked for nearly 10 years at Patton Boggs with a range of corporate and start up clients. She also served as counsel to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) on the Senate Judiciary Committee, focusing on criminal justice and civil liberties issues and the nomination of Bill Lann Lee to become head of the Civil Rights division at DOJ. Earlier, as a legislative aide to Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA), Karen focused on civil justice, family policies and immigration issues.
Karen is a graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School. In law school, she served on the Board of the East Palo Alto Community Law Project and on the Stanford Journal of International Law. She also co-founded the "Children and Family Law Society," and practiced law at Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe in San Francisco after graduation.
Karen was born and raised in Pasadena, California. She is a member of the District of Columbia and California Bar Associations and serves on the Board of the Youth Law Center.
