Derrick supports clients’ national media campaigns and daily communications efforts. He also assists with coalition building, outreach and public policy development.
Prior to joining The Raben Group, Derrick worked on Pedro Nava’s campaign for Attorney General, drafting email communications, staffing the candidate, and reaching out to potential donors. From 2008-2009, Derrick served as the International Relations Chair for the National Black Law Students Association. As chair, he developed a national fundraising campaign to benefit Haitian children in Cite Soleil and led a delegation to Port-au-Prince in spring of 2009.
In 2008, Derrick was a Student Attorney in the Bluhm Legal Clinic’s Center for International Human Rights, during which time he traveled to Malawi to conduct interviews of imprisoned homicide defendants facing the death penalty. He drafted memoranda, legal opinions, and bail applications on behalf of defendant clients, and ultimately helped the team to secure the release of several individuals.
Derrick will soon complete an LL.M in Entertainment and Media Law at Southwestern Law School. He holds a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and an M.F.A. in Critical Studies (Creative Writing) from California Institute of the Arts. Derrick graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English with minors in Writing and American Culture Studies from Washington University and served as president of Alpha Phi Alpha’s St. Louis city-wide chapter, Alpha Eta.
