Before joining The Raben Group, Charu was an independent communications consultant in Cleveland, Ohio, where she created and managed communications strategies, including social media and multi-media ventures, for non-profits. Her writing for clients has appeared in major daily newspapers, and she has drafted legislative testimony at the state and federal level. In 2010, Charu led an application process that resulted in a $100,000 national award – the Purpose Prize for social entrepreneurs over 60 – for the board president of a large non-profit.
Charu perfected her techniques in grassroots media and advocacy campaigns as the director of communications for Empowering & Strengthening Ohio’s People, the state’s largest foreclosure and financial services non-profit.
A practicing journalist for eight years, Charu is a skilled researcher, writer and video producer. She has won numerous awards for her public service journalism, including stories on criminal justice and consumer and community affairs. Charu's reporting on Cleveland's entrenched and growing predatory lending and foreclosure problems predated most local and national coverage of the subprime issue. Her work provided the basis for reports by international news outlets, including Australia's investigative TV show "Four Corners," and the Danish Broadcasting Corp., Denmark's largest broadcast news outlet.
Charu has a master’s degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Chicago. You can read some of Charu's award-winning writing at www.charugupta.org.
